Best sport fishing on the island!
Could not have asked for a better fishing outing with Captain Brett and Kamiela from Humdinger! They were extremely accommodating and made us feel at home on their boat. They were even sympathetic when one of us spent most of the trip nauseated and throwing up! We were psyched to land a 100+ pound Blue Marlin, what an experience! Both guys busted their butts to get that fish up to the boat for us to take a closer look at/take photos. We didn’t get any more bites, but we didn’t mind as we had great conversation with the staff. They offered us fresh fish they caught earlier in the day once we got back to the dock, and boy was it amazing! Please consider these guys for your next excursion!

Good Trip But No Fish
Well we were the unlucky ones. The captain and crew were great. started us out early as they saw us in the parking lot, but after 4 hours we did not see or catch a single fish. But we will go back again. learned a lot about trolling, lures etc.

I took my sons on a half day fishing trip and we all had a fantastic time! Brett and Kamiela were knowledgeable, personable and worked extremely hard for us the entire trip. They made us feel welcome on the boat and really did everything to make this an enjoyable and memorable experience for me and my boys (their first sport fishing experience). We caught a 45# spearfish, and Kamiela helped my son reel in and boat the fish, which weighed almost as much as my son. I’ve been on several similar charters around the world and this was one of the best that I’ve experienced. Top notch!

These guys were very informed and professional and fun! We caught 3 yellow fin tuna 20/30/70, and they cleaned the two little ones for us to take with us. Boat was very clean and these two make a great team! We have been on many charters in Kona and this was one of the best! Most of the charters don’t let you keep the catch at all but these guys did!

Helpful crew, clean boat, and fish
What first impressed me about Humdinger was the captain and crew were ready to go as soon as we showed up at 6:30. Lines were in the water as soon as we cleared the harbor. A lot of captains just sit back and let the deck hand do all the work but on Humdinger, he was right there helping to get the lines out. The boat was clean (especially the bathroom). Our son caught a spearfish right off the bat which was great fun (and great ceviche later that night). Then his girlfriend hooked into a huge marlin. The captain and deck hand did everything they could to help her bring it into the boat but it was just too big and too strong. Some boat captains can be grumpy when the big one gets away but they were very supportive of the novice angler who was fighting the marlin, helping as much as they could but letting her take the lead as much as she could. And no pouting when it got off. We really enjoyed our day on the water with Humdinger.

Great experience, Great people!
I booked this charter for my husband for our 25th anniversary. We had never been sport fishing before but my husband has always talked about wanting to catch a Blue Marlin. Before I booked our charter I called and spoke with Bret. He was very friendly and had no problem taking the time to answer my many questions. We booked the 3/4 day starting at 6:30 am. This turned out to be the perfect amount of time. The morning started slow but we had great conversation with the crew. They were so nice that it felt like we were fishing with friends. Between trolling and changing up the lures and adding a teaser fish they did everything they could to make sure that we would catch something. Then 3 hours in we hooked a Blue Marlin, and an hour and a half later we hooked a short billed spearfish. We just couldn’t believe that we caught two fish and the crew was just as happy for us. In conclusion we just can’t give Humdinger a high enough rating. Their dedication, professionalism and genuine love of fishing just can’t be beat. We are looking forward to returning to Kona and fishing with them again. If you book with these guys will not be disappointed.

After a very quick callback from my website inquiry, Humdinger answered all my questions and we booked a 4 hour mid-day charter. We were only in Kona for a short time on a cruise ship stop, so this limited our fishing time. After a short cab ride from the pier to the Humdinger slip we met the crew right on time. The boat, the gear, and most importantly the crew were top notch. They have excellent equipment on a well maintained and comfortable boat. We got to fishing quickly but unfortunately no hook ups during our short trip. Still they tried hard and did everything they could to put us on the fish. We had a fun time, with good conversation and an enjoyable time on the sea. Next time we’re in Kona we’ll be back to try again.

Humdinger sportfishing rocks!
Chartered a 4 hour session on Humdinger to try to catch wahoo. Had already caught bluefin, yellowfin, albacore, skipjack and bonito in years before in my home waters off San Diego. Told the captain I wanted to complete the series with a wahoo (ono). Two hours into the charter – POW – a double hook-up with wahoo. Boated a 14-pounder and a 17-pounder. Mission accomplished. In addition to the thoroughly professional work by Captain Jeff Fay with son Brett crewing, they steered me to a local Thai restaurant that cooks sport caught fish. My wife and I had a great meal of curry wahoo from the fillets the Fays provided me. Couldn’t ask for a better fishing charter!

I surprised my boyfriend with a chartered fishing trip and am so glad we did. It was an awesome time. We even managed to see whales on our tour which was an added bonus. The crew was very attentive and was determined that we would not go back empty handed. My boyfriend and I each managed to snag a good size mahi-mahi on our tour. We were also very close to a sail fish but unable to catch it- but it was still exciting. The captain even helped me via the boat when it was my turn to lure in my fish. Great crew and awesome time. I would certainly book with them again if my travels take me back to Hawaii!

The captain and crew were very accommodating and knowledgeable. Our group was two couples, with all of us having very little deepwater fishing experience. The weather was bad and thisblerge fish weren’t cooperating, however the captain managed to find a lost fishing net that was holding a few fish. We managed to catch a couple Mahi Mahi, and missed one Ahi later in the trip. I would definitely book with the Humdinger again!

Get Hooked Up
Looking for a way to celebrate my fishing enthusiast husband’s 40th birthday in Kailua-Kona, HI, we found Humdinger Sportfishing online and booked right away. To give you an idea of their popularity, they were booked weeks out so make sure you plan ahead to secure your spot (you don’t wanna miss out on fishing on the Humdinger). The reservation was easy and when we finally got there, they gave us directions to the dock. There are 2 parking spots right in front where the boat is parked. Prior to leaving, we spoke to a few other boats on the dock and learned about the great reputation that the Humdinger had locally which made us even more stoked. Our hard-working crew for this trip was Captain Brett and the first mate Rob. They were both personable, friendly, experienced and extremely knowledgeable. If you’ve never been fishing before, they will go over everything as well as physically run through the entire process prior to hooking up. Brett knew and took us to all the spots to get fish on. Once we had one on the line (which you will if you fish on the Humdinger), Rob provided guidance the whole time until the fish was on the boat. We took the AM 3/4 trip and caught 2 sailfish. We had such a good time, we will definitely come back to Kona, HI just to fish with Humdinger Sportfishing. Thanks again to Humdinger and the awesome crew!!

This was our first experience of deep sea fishing, it was great to be out fishing promptly in the clear morning light at 06:30am.We landed, tagged and then released a short nose spear fish, which was wonderful, with a mid sized Blue Marlin approaching the lure also, Brett and the team provided great instruction between looking out for the best area’s to fish on a day when most boats failed to secure a catch, it was a very enjoyable morning, my daughter really enjoyed it, it her 1st trip also.

We took our kids out and Jeff and Brett were great from the start. They both were very friendly and professional. We had a brief run down of the boat and were out fishing. Captain Brett was awesome, First Mate Darren was extremely personable, clean boat, great equipment, smooth ride. Best of all we caught a 40 lb, 70″ Shortnose Spearfish in the first 30 minutes, the Rarest Billfish in the world, only found in Hawaii! We saw a pilot whale in the distance and some spinner dolphins just to sweeten the day. The rest of the trip did not yield any dditional bragging rights, but it was very clear that the spearfish was a real prize and definitely a huge brag! The cherry on top of our vacation! Mahalo!! “Family first trip to Kona, Blue Marlin Excitement”
My family of four chartered a trip on the Humdinger while in Kona on our boys’ spring break. We fished with Captain Brett Fay and Brandon W. the last week of March 2017. We headed out of the harbor and Brandon got all the lines/lures set. We were still getting acclimated to the setup and getting the rundown on the equipment and some tips/coaching on how to fight a fish when one of the reels went off. It was game on! How exciting! We knew immediately it was a Blue Marlin as it jumped out of the water in the distance. Thanks to some good coaching and over a half hour fight, we landed that 400 lb blue marlin! What a majestic creature, and a catch I’ll likely never forget! Brandon was able to tag and release the fish unharmed. It was quite a sight to see it swim away after that battle. It was the only hookup we had on the trip, but what a fish it was! Brett and Brandon were great hosts and really nice guys. It was fun to talk with them, and hear stories of how Brett’s dad brought this custom Rybovich to Kona. These guys are serious fishermen, and as a serious fisherman myself it was just as I had hoped for. Online booking was very quick and easy to look at availability and pricing to be able to plan your fishing trip to fit your needs. I’d recommend spending a little extra to get as much time with these guys on this boat as you can. It was also easy to add nice extras to your trip including drinks, sandwiches, go pro camera, and t-shirt right on the website. These are all reasonably priced items and very convenient so all you have to do is show up. I’d especially recommend the go-pro camera to capture video memories of your trip. Book with these guys and you won’t regret it. They know what they are doing! When I get back to Kona, I know I’ll be going out with them again. Thanks, guys!

“First Marlin attempt”
I booked a trip with humdinger March 2017 while in Hawaii on my daughters spring break. My expectations were realistic – I wanted to try fishing for marlin even though it was not the prime season. I did not expect to hook or even land a monster. I just wanted to give it a shot. The captain made sure I had no issues with sea sickness as he wanted to fish a certain area that was away from the crowd on the windy side of the island. To my surprise 35 minutes in I was hooked up to a estimated 300 pound marlin that pulled 350 yards of drag out before coming unhooked. The fish gave us a few jumps before spitting the hook. Unfortunately that was the only bite of the day, but needless to say I am addicted and can’t wait to give it another go the next time I am in Hawaii. I will be back, I will have my revenge, and I will be on the Humdinger again.

“The Ultimate Experience in Hawaii”
Our time with Humdinger Sport Fishing was the highlight of 2 weeks in Hawaii. We know that fishing does not guarantee catching but – 4 fisherman, 4 hook ups. We landed 3 and totally appreciated the guidance and assistance of Captain Brett and Cowboy. What a dream come true: a 500 pound blue marlin (released), a mahi mahi, and a short nosed spear fish. The guys were great, fun to be around, and really knew their business. Our guides also pointed out whales and even a sea turtle when we got back to the harbor. We’d recommend this to anyone, and would love to do it again.

Brett cleaned it, prepped it, bagged it and sent it home with us on a bed of ice. We left him the 2nd bag as 22# of fish was too much for our last 2 days on the island. I have fished with the Humdinger before and I continue to be impressed. We arrived and I asked about the currents and was told they were not favorable for trolling. CPT Brett offered to troll out to a spot where we could jig. We got there and switched to jigging, the mate did the jigging, which is a lot of work. He showed us how to jig and yes it is tough. We boated 1 fish and had 2 other good hits which we did not get into the boat. Bottom line the CPT and crew work hard to put us on fish, you will not go wrong fishing on the Humdinger.

Fished two days with Captains Jeff and Brett in early July. Day one was a mixed bag with marlin, mahimahi, ono, rainbow runner, and small ahi. Unfortunately day two was a little slower with multiple strikes, but no takers. The boat is smooth riding, clean, and even without AC, cool and well ventilated. No diesel smoke or fumes to ruin the day. Both captains worked together to put fish on the deck, were fun to fish with and their knowledge and experience are top notch! Made a last minute decision to book a 1/2 day charter for my fiancé while we were in Kona as he had expressed interest in going out. We got engaged on this trip just a few days before and I wanted to do something special for him and I surprised him with the booking. Capt Brett and Brandon took us out yesterday. For the first 3 1/2 hours we trolled, saw some spinner dolphins and pilot whales along the way but no bites. As someone who grew up trolling on lakes in Washington, the reality that we might get completely skunked was starting to sink in. We had taken anti-nausea medication just in case to ward off seasickness, and the medication had us totally zonked. I was fighting to stay awake and Ben, my fiancé, had definitely dozed off (if he’s tired, he’ll fall asleep on concrete, it doesn’t matter what we’re doing). Then all of a sudden we hear shouts that there is a fish, and we both bolt up. I had to remind him to get into the chair, and Brandon points out the Blue Marlin jumping to feed. With their help, Ben was able to reel in a 700 LB Blue Marlin to the boat in under 20 min!!!!!!! We tagged and released. It was absolutely unreal and one of the coolest things I think we will ever experience. These guys were amazing to go out with and the boat has a cool history. If you are considering Sportfishing in Kona, go with the Humdinger! They are amazing!

Took my dad, brother in law, niece and nephew on a 3/4 day fishing trip chartered by Jeff and Brett of the Humdinger. As advertised they were very friendly, professional and had us fishing within a few minutes from leaving the marina. About an hour into our trip we hooked up on a 100lb blue marlin. Jeff and Brett immediately sprung into action and got me set up to reel it in. Brett guided me through the process of getting the fish up to the boat and we had it tagged, took plenty of pictures and released it within 15 minutes. We trolled around for a few hours more before we hooked up on another blue marlin running close to 200 lbs. This time it was my dads turn which again through Jeff and Brett’s guidance he had it up to the boat in around 20 minutes. Such an exciting adventure for me and my family. One minute you’re relaxed just enjoying the view of the ocean and the next minute bam! fish hooks up and it’s complete chaos. Even my brother in law who is not into fishing had a good time just being able to see a couple of good size marlin up close. It’s especially exciting watching the marlin jump out of the water when it’s trying to throw the hook. We were even lucky enough to come across a pod of pilot whales which we followed for a while. I highly recommend reserving a fishing trip on the Humdinger if you’re ever in Hawaii. Captain Jeff and Brett will work hard to make sure that you catch fish. Next time I plan on booking a whole day so we can go out farther where the odds of catching a giant marlin are better.

I have been fishing on the Humdinger for many years…….and it’s always good. Captain Jeff is as good as they come ……….his knowledge and hospitality keep me coming back…..and you know what…..we catch fish. And have fun doing it!

This was an offshore trip we’ll not soon forget. You don’t have to leave sight of the shore to catch awesome fish, and the crew I know you’ll love. Thanks, captain Jeff!

I went out twice with Capt Jeff on half day charters, and I got to kick something on my bucket list the second time – catching a big blue marlin. My biggest complaint is that we didn’t stay out longer. My only other complaint is that the deck hand didn’t really go over the process for tagging the marlin – we weren’t really sure what was going on once we got the leader to the boat. It was easy to schedule and easy to find the boat in the harbor. The boat was clean, everything was as expected from being around charter boats elsewhere. We picked up some bait on the way out of the harbor, and trolled for a while. Weather was good, the boat rode dry as far as I can remember. The biggest thing was that we caught fish – we picked up a 162lb ahi the first trip, and tagged a roughly 500lb blue marlin the second trip. They were good about waiting on us when we went to grab the cooler while they prepared some ahi steaks for us. I’m going back to Kona in a few weeks, and I’ll be giving Capt Jeff a call again. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you do the same.

We had an early day on the water – the boat was in great shape – clean – well kept. The ship hand was professional, sharp, and strong. We hooked 2 separate Marlins: ~300 lbs, ~450 lbs. The 300 pounder got away. The 450 pounder took 90 minutes to reel in. It was tough. There were some tears, some blood, some fatigue, plenty of vomiting. These good folks know how to fish. That said, CPT Jeff could have laid off a bit – he yelled at us – I understand he had to keep us moving and get that fish in – and my reaction is likely an overreaction – though I was hot and sick and in no mood to be yelled at. Drink plenty of water the night before! I am fairly certain I had heat exhaustion.

When you go to Kona you will find a very relaxed Island. If you want some REEL fun go on the Humdinger. Experienced fishermen….plenty of action ..caught Blue Marlin, Ahi, Mahi and Striped Marlin in one day!!! Jeff Fay is a pheomenal captain and really helped me learn a lot about deep sea fishing. For FUN SEEKERS, even if you are not sure, go for it…my girlfriend enjoyed the close up whale watching and the catching of bait with the spin gear! Great way to spend a day in the sun!!!!

Having grown up in Newport Beach, CA and fishing from the time I was young with my grandfather, I thought I had an idea of what was to be expected when I visited Kona Hawaii for the first time and went out on the Humdinger. But, I must say that I was wrong! This was a fantastic time out on the water. These men were professionals and made sure that we had the best time. First of all, Hawaii is not the same as California… So, if you’re planning a trip to the big island, going out with Jeff and “Butch” on the Humdinger is a must. The boat was perfect (37′), clean, with a restroom (fishing all day makes this a welcomed relief), and the water was smooth. You really aren’t that far away from shore…even better since this was my first time in Hawaii. It truly is an all-day excursion and one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
