Fishing Catch Report – September 3, 2016 – Kailua-Kona, Hawaii – The last several weeks have seen a definitive uptick in the fishing here in Kona. As of today, 2 hours into a 6 hour ¾ day charter we are 3 for 4 on Blue Marlin and 1 for 1 on Shortbilled spearfish. Yesterday we caught a really nice tuna for a client on a ½ day charter. Mix in a few Mahi Mahi and Ono here and there and most of our charters the past few weeks have seen really good action.
This year in general the fishing in Kona has been well above average, but in the last few weeks we have seen the best fishing I can recall in a long time. Many of the boats in the fleet are also experiencing similar results, with multiple bites/catches/tags each day. While there are a lot of Blue Marlin in the 150 to 250 pound class showing up right now, there are still good numbers of fish being tagged and released in the 500 to 850 pound class. The tunas have slowed down a bit from their summer peak, but we are still catching one or two per week right now. The action seems to be a little spottier as we head into the fall season.
We have seen a slight uptick in the number of Mahi Mahi showing up. As we move closer to the fall and winter months, expect to see more and more numbers showing up here in Kona. As we move further away from summer, the numbers of Ono drop off a bit, but we are still seeing them here and there and catching a few fish a week as well.
Expect the fishing to remain very good through the full moon on September 17th. September is one of the best months in Kona and one of my favorite months to fish here because the town empties out with the kids headed back to school and the Tournament season is over for the most part, resulting in less pressure on the grounds. If you are planning on visiting Kona in the next few months, be sure to take advantage of our fall charter special from September 1st through November 15th when our ½ Day Fishing Charters are just $399. One price books the whole boat, up to six passengers and we are happy to have you keep your catch. We do however encourage the tag and release of the Billfish.

Realized it with a really nice Blue Marlin.The crew worked really hard on a couple of days were the fish were not. Itting so well. Kona is a beautiful place. It is also an excellent place to fish for Blues.

Had the chance to book a Kona fishing charter on our trip to the big island and was fortunate to find a half day charter on the Humdinger on short notice. Having done a lot of deep sea fishing on party boats, I wasnt sure what to expect on a private charter. We never fished far from shore, maybe a mile or two at the most. We caught a small blue marlin and a rare speafish and missed a mystery bite. All in all it was a great day and the crew was fantastic. I would highly recommend them.

We took our first Deep Sea Fishing Trip. The Crew was very informative and made the trip enjoyable. We caught two different types of fish. Our four teenagers had a great time. I would recommend the Humdinger with Jeff and Brett on the boat for a wonderful experience.

An absolutely wonderful excursion! There were 3 of us that booked a 4 hour charter on the Humdinger. One in our group had deep sea fishing on her bucket list and she is thrilled that Captain Jeff and his son Brett were the ones to see it through! At first it looked like it would just be a 4 hour boat ride but we were still having a great time. We got to visit with Brett and talked about everything from fishing to places for great local plate lunches. Brett is a very polite, professional and friendly young man. And if you get a hit you can watch him fly into action, an impressive sight! On the way back our bucket list friend got a hit and reeled in a 30 plus pound short nosed spearfish – a blast for all of us!! After tons of pictures Brett filleted the fish, packed it in bags and put it on ice for us. Fortunately, we were staying in a condo so we could enjoy the catch. We had it grilled, pan sautéed, lightly breaded in pano, etc. Definitely ate more fish in two weeks than we usually do in a year! We also shared some with a friend that lives on the island. Captain Jeff is a very pleasant and knowledgeable man but we didn’t get to visit much with him during the charter because he was upstairs piloting the boat. Before we left the mainland we called several charters for information and pricing. Having never gone deep sea fishing we were clueless about everything and had tons of questions. Captain Jeff very patiently answered and re-answered all of our questions. He was also the best priced charter of the ones we called. We highly recommend the Humdinger and it’s awesome father/son team to anyone looking for a great experience deep sea fishing!
