The fishing in Kona has been a bit sporadic the past week or so. We had a low pressure system move in over the island and bring some rain and things got a bit out of sorts for a few days there. The bite on the Shortbilled Spearfish seems to have slowed down a bit from the great action we saw earlier in the month. In the past few days however, we are seeing a few more Ono (Wahoo) caught and we landed a nice one to day ourselves. The Ono should show up in really good numbers over the next few months with the peak of their migration being around the full moon in May give or take.
In addition to the Ono we caught today, we also landed a nice Mahi Mahi (Dorado) for our charter. We have caught several Mahi Mahi over the past few weeks and like the Ono, these fish are prized for their light flaky flesh that holds up well on the grill. Now that the low pressure system is out of here, and the trades are blowing again, expect the fishing to be a bit more consistent. There were some nice blue marlin caught over the weekend (up to 500 lbs.) and there are still a good number of striped marlin hanging around too. Captain Jeff and Brett were great! We are seasoned anglers and can tell a top notch operation when we see it and they for sure are! First time deep=sea fishing and hooked a 150 lb yellow fin tuna! It was a struggle but with the help and encouragement from Capt Brett and first mate Ryan I was able to land the tuna that was as big as me! Only thing I would change would be not to get seasick after all that exertion. Next time I will stay hydrated and let my Dad do more of the work reeling in the big fish. Jack G

Had the chance to book a Kona fishing charter on our trip to the big island and was fortunate to find a half day charter on the Humdinger on short notice. Having done a lot of deep sea fishing on party boats, I wasnt sure what to expect on a private charter. We never fished far from shore, maybe a mile or two at the most. We caught a small blue marlin and a rare speafish and missed a mystery bite. All in all it was a great day and the crew was fantastic. I would highly recommend them.
